housefloor.de: you are dj for 15 years now and are an essential part of the electronic scene in belgium. what influenced you in your first years as a dj?
marco bailey: first i was possessed by funk, hip hop & dmc nights. i was totally into that things like q’bert from the us and even dj david from germany was breakdancing on his decks etc. :-)
i’ve played also things like the clash, the pixies, dave ball, simple minds, john fox etc. from little bars ands clubs later on to the belgium house-techno scene to r&s. and to what it became all today.

housefloor.de: in the beginning 90s you played mostly trance and goa music. what do you think about the changes and current releases in these areas?
marco bailey:

in the beginning of the 90s it was not all so separated in all different styles like now.
i played nights from 9-10 hours sets and of course yes trance but different then now. sven vath, dj dag were the heroes! :-) all more pure.
now today trance became all more commercial which not means it is worse. but i changed my mind to play a bit different than in the beginning of the 90s cause i missed the pure sense too much more and more.

housefloor.de: in 1999 you established your first own label, session recordings. why did you decide to do so just in that moment?
marco bailey: after years of doing stuff always for other people i decided this in 1999.
session recordings is a label that i started with zzino, known from the good old days from re-load records etc. it was time to set up bit by bit something what i always wanted to do. having your own label of course.
now mb elektronics & mb selektions are my two most important labels. and of course pornographic that i run together with my soulmate cristian varela from spain.
on mb elektronics we got works from adam beyer, smith & selway, david carreta, redhead, chester beatty and more. while we go with mb selektions a more deep and dark way with sounds from takaaki itoh, claude young, james ruskin and others.

housefloor.de: in the year 2000 you released your quite successful "play it back ep" on carl cox' in those days still young imprint intec records. how came about this cooperation?
marco bailey: i've always respected the big black man a lot. and simply on a party in belgium where we played together, carl asked me to do something for his label. with my pleasure of course.
this month there will be a new one on his in-tec label named “never say never ep”. carl is a great person with always a smile to the people. and with the heart on the right place! when he smiles the smile is not made, but real!

housefloor.de: since the late 90s you have consequently released eps and remixes with redhead, also under the name soulwatcher. how can we imagine your team play?
lmarco bailey: redhead and i live almost next to each other, we know each other since we were kids and went to school. in the beginning we shared our studio for many years. today we each have our own studio, but daily we still hook up together. friendship which is real is the most beautiful what exists.

housefloor.de: so far you've been most famous for hard techno. on your current album rudeboy there also are a couple of softer tracks. how come?
marco bailey: i hate it when people put a label on you without knowing you. for example sometimes i meet djs and producers which never heard you playing and they say you play only hard techno???????
i‘m in much more then only hard techno. that’s why i included now also some electro and things without typical techno elements like kicks and hi hats. but only nice chords.
in my next works i even gonna do it more and trying to do better. :-) of course i like strong techno “with balls“ a lot. :-) but this does really not mean i don’t like other styles.

housefloor.de: several locations in tokyo and singapur belong to your favourite clubs. what is special to you about these clubs in asian metropoles?
marco bailey: asia has a special place in my heart. different culture. and also because everything is always perfect organised: from sound to light and the people are great.
for exemple in japan. sound is always high quality which is important i think for a dj to give a good set for the people. what i also respect so much is: i played also in several small locations in japan. sometimes the promoters don’t even make enough money for themselves even with a full club. but the hospitality stays professional and the smile on the face for the music stays there! just great!

housefloor.de: you not only know the belgian but also the german party scene quite well. which differences do you see in the electronic music scenes in both countries?
marco bailey: belgium is smaller then germany … :-) ….
no.. seriously: i think both countries are doing really well and having lots of qualities.
lots of good producers etc! also both are there since many many years.
we with i love techno & fuse & silo club ect. in belgium.
germany with the omen, mayday, nature one, time warp, cocoon club, tresor club etc. from the 90’s until now all great moments. too many good things to say.
hope there will be more harmony and i hope the nice parties which are out there still every weekend will never die!

housefloor.de: this summer you've been playing in clubs all over europe nearly every weekend from friday till sunday. you can't stay that pace for long, do you have different plans for the upcoming winter?
marco bailey: if your heart belongs to the music you are never tired! instead it loads you up.
but indeed i will „try” to take off a few days in january. :-)
