housefloor.de:

after the release of „fear & loathing 1” in 2001 now the follow-up release „fear & loathing 2” is available in the stores in january 2005. again you surprise us with a journey through the genres. how and where should people in your opinion listen to your newest production?

luke slater:

i like it that you picked up on the journey aspect. i wanted to put something together more than just a comp of dance tracks. the journey is such an important dimension for me in music. i hope i did that.
i like to think you can listen to it anywhere.

housefloor.de: for the compilation you sensitively arranged the material of your colleagues to an entire mix. can “fear & loathing 2” be understood as an homage to the producers whose tracks you have interwoven in it?
luke slater:

well yes of course.not that any tracks were chosen for any other reason other than the music. but naturally the artists who did do them i relate to because of the music and wanted to put something back. i'm fine with the idea i used my name to promote these artists and these tracks. they are all valid.

housefloor.de:

who are the people who where most important for your musical development?

luke slater:

lultimately my father.
he saw i had the bug.

housefloor.de: you've been to many places all around the globe. in which part of it do people in your opinion party the wildest or most intensive way?
luke slater: haha, yes well, i have done some wild partys. it's actually very hard to pinpoint any particular one. sometimes the time and situation is just right and it all goes off. very good.
i love doing shows.

housefloor.de:

you are said to be one of the producers that have quite an influence on the electronic scene. does that put pressure on you to keep being successful with your music?

luke slater:

yes i seem to have done that. i make music ultimately for myself and hope others like what i do. i have put records out to try and add new colours and ideas into the scene and sometimes they work. when they do its great.

housefloor.de: you are one of the few established long time producers that don't own a record label. why have you decided not to found one so far?
luke slater: not enough time and i tried it before anyway. i've often thought about it and don't rule it out in the future.

housefloor.de:

what kind of music do you listen to in your free time? only electronic music or also alternative stuff?

luke slater: i listen to lots of alternative music. anyting different and interesting. when i have time. i usually take a selection around on my ipod or powerbook.

housefloor.de:

can you imagine that in these days of advanced computer technology and improving sound programs the original vinyl will die out one day and then, for example, a dj will play from his home studio via internet to several clubs at the same time?

luke slater:

many technologies have added to the dj role and they are all cool but man, i play vinyl. i love the sound. and i can manipulate it well. it feels real. technology doesn't always replace things, it can add to it. i like it when it adds rather than replaces.

housefloor.de:

you are dj for more than 15 years now. what do you think: into which sound directions will the electronic music scene develop?

luke slater: everyone always askes me that.
one thing i do know, it has to stay creative to survive.
music comes from the heart.
