shortly you have released your 11th (!) album called „where“. can you explain how you can be so productive? where do you get inspiration from? |
john tejada: |
i've just always enjoyed working on music. i also enjoy listening to all types of music which gives lots of inspiration. |

how differs „where“ from your other albums? has there been a concept when you started producing it?
john tejada: |
this time around i just started working on pieces that were fun for me without any intention on releasing them or worrying about a project. but a few weeks after i realized i had a few songs and should complete a new album. |

for the song „desire“ you worked together with singer nicolette. you only work with vocals when there is a special reason to do so. what has been this reason in „desire“ and with nicolette? |
john tejada: |
usually my reason for working with a vocalist is more personal. i've done work with my mother who is an opera singer and a couple of other people quite close to me. nicolette is in the process of moving to los angeles. i met her through some mutual friends and we got along great instantly. it was just a matter of time i guess before we tried something in the studio. |

most of „where“ has been produced with analogue synthizers and drum computers. why do you stick to analogue ways of making music? |
john tejada: |
for the time being i prefer to use real instruments again. i've been able to collect some interesting pieces and i just feel they have a lot of character and are a lot of fun to work with. i got rid of all my old synths as most people did when it was all of a sudden possible to do so many things with just a computer, but i really missed it. so i slowly made my way back and now i feel i have the best combination of both. |

for 16 years now you regularly work together in the studio with arian leviste. what is so special about your co-operation that it always stays inspiring? |
john tejada: |
this summer will actually be our 17th year together. it's quite something when we think about how long it's been. but working together is just the most natural thing in the world to us. it all comes together so easy. |

when you were eight years old you started playing the drums and you still do so today in the project „i’m not a gun“ with the jazz gituarist takeshi nishimoto. what fascinates you about the drums more than about other instruments? |
john tejada: |
i'm not sure exactly what it is but perhaps i was mostly drawn to rhythm at a young age. before that i was playing piano all the time, but once i saw someone playing a drum set that was it. i had to learn how. |

what is the first thing you do when you come home? |
john tejada: |
i guess that depends on how long i've been gone. if i'm back from tour i probably go to sleep. |

what can we expect from you in the near future and what are your long-term aims? |
john tejada: |
recently arian, justin maxwell and myself just finished an ep together. it's the first time the 3 of us have worked together. that will be the first release after the album. after that some time in the fall will be a new album by „i'm not a gun“ titled „mirror". it will be our 4th album and first album on palette. we're quite excited about bringing the project home.
