housefloor.de: your new album "the message" ›› brings techno in its classic sense. was there a concrete idea for the album to guide you while producing?
sub space:

this project has really started in 2006 when jeff mills ordered a live from us for his residence at the womb in tokyo. this live was meant to translate the feelings of a travel from the earth to mars, with all it could mean: suspense, beauty, agressiviness…a totally different way to design music, more conceptual, more mental than what we had done previously with mirage. all the sounds are programed, we do not use any samples. that is what the sub space project really meant at the beginning: transmit sensations via music like soundtrack-composers would do.

housefloor.de: you have been working together in music for more than a decade now. why do you two fit together so well as djs and producers? which traits of character do you appreciate about one another?
sub space: we do not know exactly what is the character of trait that has been rallying together but it is true that to be able to work together for so many years this is a real chance, we have seen so many group that got separated.
for us this is a little different, we were friends before knowing that we would do music and we believe this changes everything.

housefloor.de: in 1997 you have found your label mirage records. why did you decide to do so and with which philosophy do you run mirage?
sub space: the philosophy of mirage is quite simple and basic right from the start, we wanted to get out discs that we would have been able to buy, as a dj, we had no completely set ideas, our only objective was "move your body", to get people dance, which remains a priority in our mind.

housefloor.de: before you released the "first step ep" on axis records in 2005 as a debut for the alias sub space, you had already had numerous releases as dj julien & gonzague. why did you create sub space at that time?
sub space: sub space was created only for jeff mills' mission 6277 project at the beginning. jeff wanted us to take a new identity because the music was very different from what we had done previously. sub space was intended to be more pure, hypnotic and mental. julien & gonzague is known more for the pumping techno tracks, with a funkier sound. less mental. today we are trying to link the two ends of the chain together.

housefloor.de: in clubs you can not only be seen as a dj, but as a live act as well. how does the sound and feel of a dj-set differ from your live-set? what do you do in the last five minutes before a live gig starts?
sub space: we have no real difference in approach, because we are dj's first and our goal remains to make people dance. that is why our live shows are very energetic and are mixed as a dj set.
as everyone else we go to the toilet, and get telling stupid jokes to try to alleviate our stress.

housefloor.de: french sounds had a huge impression on electronic music with the french & filter house music of daft punk & co at the end of the 90s. what is in your eyes special about the french electronic music and club scene right now?
sub space: even if the french scene is not as important as the end of 90 years, it remains present, we have some artists who continue to be exported throughout the world. as far as the club's scene is a bit more difficult, laws are increasingly reprehensive, and for the clubs this is increasingly difficult to mount a beautiful projects, on the other hand the festivals have taken over as they are increasingly numerous in france as in most european countries.

housefloor.de: what can we expect from you in the near future and what are your long-term aims?
sub space: as far as our near future, the next mirage 017 "rock da house" is scheduled for october 08 (vinyl & digital).
another maxi will be released on the dutch label dynamic reflection the december 08.
and we are preparing a cd live-act which will be released in 2009.
