housefloor.de: Your new album “A Mishmash of Changing Moods” is going to be released on Traum in April. How did you find inspiration for producing it?
Applescal:<

I found inspiration by sitting in the studio and trying to do something new, as I had problems with making dancefloor tracks. I liked it and after a few finished projects i saw an album in potential. When Traum heard the tracks, and they thought they were cool, I was full of ideas and almost made a track a week. It was a crazy time.

housefloor.de: How long did you work on it and how did the tracks develop? How can we imagine you working in the studio?
Applescal: I think I worked half a year on it. I finished most of the tracks when I started them. At the end I changed some of them in the arrangement.
My studio is like a small wooden bunker inside a room next to the bathroom. It's like one big messy ash-tray when I'm productive and I think if my landlord sees it on a bad day I have to leave the house forever, hahaha.

housefloor.de: How does your new album differ from your debut album “A Slave’s Commitment” which has been released in 2009 on Traum as well?
Applescal: The first album was more like a compilation of tracks I've made over the years and which was hard to release on seperate EPs. We decided to change some of the tracks and release it as an album.
My new album is made as a concept with all kind of Breakbeat stuff, pads and melodies. I think it's not an album for DJs, but for movies.

housefloor.de: It’s obvious that your cooperation with Traum has taken you a step further. Without having released any EP from you they signed you for your debut album. How did you get together with Riley from Traum?
Applescal: We got together after a demo I've sent. I was really surprised as they contacted me a week after I've send it out.
It could be true that my music has taken a step further, as the feedback makes sense if you work with someone who's done over 300 releases. Riley helped me in the album process. I have listened to a lot of albums over the years, but making one yourself is quiet a different job.

housefloor.de: You are well-known for your Live sets. How much equipment do you need and what do you do in the last five minutes before the gig starts?
Applescal: I simply plug my laptop in the mixer. I work with Ableton and two controllers on stage. Before I start I sit on the floor behind the stage and try to stay calm, as I want to give all I have on stage.
housefloor.de: Do you play as a DJ also?
Applescal: No. I'm a producer, not a DJ. I tried a few times at home, but I can't mix and I can't pitch tracks on the same bpm. I admire people who can, because being a good DJ is not only mixing records.
housefloor.de: With your 22 years you are still young but already releasing your second album and touring across Europe. When did you start producing and how did you develop your style in music?
Applescal: I started when I was 14. Just having fun in being really bad. Somehow I learned making music myself. If someone told me six years ago that I released my second album on traum when I was 22, I’d probably told him he could better find a good shrink.
housefloor.de: How did you get your artist name Applescal?
Applescal: One of my old highschool friends made it up. I liked it right away as my real name is Pascal.

housefloor.de: What are your plans for this summer?
Applescal: Hopefully I play at a few cool festivals in Europe. And maybe take a week off abroad with parents and sister.
