dj tonic started dj'ing in 1995. although he started off in the drum 'n bass scene, he was already listening to some fine house music as well. in 1998 starski got the opportunity to start playing at decadance (ghent). one year later he met tonic at the record store and one thing led to another: pretty soon they became an eclectic dj-duo! their dj-sets were a mixture of moody grooves, deep house, funky shit and breakbeats.
at one point tonic bumped into electro and got addicted right away. influenced by i-f, italo was the next thing he got himself involved in. starski started exploring the depths of good electronic grooves and a bit later got hooked on disco-electro too.
as time went by, their musical taste evolved, resulting in dj-sets that cross over between electro, house, italo, new beat, 80's, funky grooves, disco-electro and dark pop.
october 2002: jan van biesen asked tonic if he wanted to make a weekly contribution to switch, the dance program of studio brussels on fridays and saturdays. electroshock was born... for the new season (2004-2005) starski & tonic kept on selecting and mixing tracks for switch. they were playing tracks like "dj t - freemind" , "mylo - drop the pressure" , "zoot woman - grey day" , "rex the dog - prototype"... long before they became hits.
at the end of 2002, dirk (eskimo recordings) asked starski & tonic to become co-residents at culture club in their hometown ghent together with the glimmer twins.
in september 2003, renaud (cosy mozzy) started a new club-concept at the famous mirano continental in brussels with starski & tonic as one of the residents at these "dirty dancing" - saturdays. they became a much in demand duo and already played at i love techno, body 2 body, 10 days off, belmondo, eskimo, pukkelpop, city parade, amsterdam dance event, café d'anvers, luna, feest in 't park, ghentsessions, h2o, gyzmo, decadance, leffinge leuren, studio brussels, cinema, pablodikobar,...
in the summer of 2004 they played at a lot of national festivals and went on tour through germany together with "die raketen".
with “sample police”, their contribution to “goin’ out” on jim tv they take us back to the early, early days of dance music. yes, they know their classics as well as the little gems that dwelled in oblivion, until their reappearance – more or less in disguise – in one or other new dance anthem. and “mishmash”, the new lux janssen show on studio brussel regularly features starski & tonic “medley” mixes.
starski and tonic are crowd pleasers and their only goal is getting you out there on the floor shaking some leg. expect a dose of electro, then add a dash of kitsch, a pinch of rock, some house and new beat and you'll feel relaxed, moody, seriously up for dancing... or strangely disoriented... |
